Moving Back Home: A Survival Guide to the Post-College Transition
After a year of independence, your student is moving back home for the summer and it can feel like a strange kind of time travel for both of you. They’ve been managing their own schedule, feeding themselves (or not), and answering to no one but themselves. Here’s how you can help make the transition smoother for your whole household.
Talk about expectations before the boxes are even unpacked. A quick conversation in the first few days about curfew, chores, guests, and grocery habits saves you both weeks of silent frustration later. Try to resist the urge to slide back into the household rules from high school. Your student has been living independently. Treating them the same way you did at seventeen will create friction fast.
Boundaries go both ways. Consider offering trust instead of a strict curfew. Ask for a heads-up text in return instead of radio silence. These small gestures signal respect without requiring either of you to give up everything you’re used to.
Give yourselves grace during the adjustment period. It’s normal to feel friction in the first week or two as everyone recalibrates. A little empathy goes a long way: remember what it felt like to crave independence at that age and remember that your student missed you too, even if they don’t say it. This isn’t about reclaiming control, it’s about reconnecting.
Encourage some structure. A loose plan for the summer, whether it’s a job, an internship, volunteering, or classes, helps prevent the aimless drift that can create tension at home. It also gives you both something easier to talk about at the dinner table besides “nothing much.”
Finally, plan for the goodbye before it arrives. Talking early about what move-out or move-back-to-school will look like keeps the summer from ending in a scramble.
A smooth transition home is really just the first step toward a smooth transition back out the door. That’s where we come in. Curated Campus handles the packing, shipping, and move logistics so you can focus on the time you have together.
